DIABETIC FOOT COMPLICATIONS

July 5, 2022

Diabetes is a systemic condition that can affect your feet. Podiatrists help to assess, identify and prevent lower limb diabetic foot complications.

Having diabetes doesn’t always mean having issues with your feet, but if left untreated it can lead to 3 main issues:

1. Reduced blood supply to your feet
2. Loss of nerve supply and sensation in your feet
3. Muscular contracture and foot deformity

These complications can result in the development of foot ulcers, and if left untreated, may lead
to infection and amputation.

Podiatrists are foot specialists that can help you in assessing your foot posture, gait, nerve, blood flow,
footwear and general lower limb health. All of our Podiatrists are trained and proficient in helping treat patients with diabetes.

There are so many things your Podiatrist can do to help! The first thing we do is thoroughly assess your nerve and bloody supply, review your skin and nail health plus we can assess the mechanics of your feet and footwear. We then create an individualised treatment plan for you and educate you on all the ways you can look after your feet. We believe in education and patient centred treatment and we work as a team with our patients to get the best outcomes for their feet, lower limbs, and overall health.
