Do You Need To See A Podiatrist?

June 9, 2017

A Podiatrist is an expert on treating and assessing the foot and ankle. You do not need to have the pain to warrant an appointment.

Diabetics should see a Podiatrist at least annually for a general foot checkup even if no symptoms are apparent.

I believe Podiatry is a unique profession because we get to treat all age groups from newborns to the elderly and everyone in between.

If you are wanting to be proactive about your health, are unevenly wearing your shoes, have begun running, increased your exercise or are interested in a foot and ankle assessment then book an appointment today.

I have found that a lot of injuries could have been easily prevented if people knew some simple tips and tricks for looking after their feet and shoes. I have a passion for providing people with appropriate footwear to match their foot type, lifestyle and needs.

Here are my top 4 tips for general foot health:

  1. Use a urea-based emollient daily on your heels. You can get lazy with this one over winter but come summer there’s no negotiating if you want smooth, healthy heels.
  2. Wear thongs around the pool shared showers and gyms – You don’t want to pick up any nasties!
  3. Replace your runners every 12 months even if you haven’t completely worn them out. It’s a  good idea to have two different types of runners on the go which you can swap and change between regularly.
  4. DON’T cut your nails into a ‘v’ shape! People are forever asking me if they should be cutting their nails down the sides into a ‘v’. I don’t know who started this rumour but it’s not good for your nails. Cut nails straight across. If you feel that you need to dig down around the sides then see a Podiatrist and let us do it professionally and correctly.

Shoe tip: My favourite shoe for overall foot health? New balance has seamless uppers which are great for preventing rubbing. I love their new activewear range Cruz.
